2017 Stefan Bauer Roter Veltliner

Stefan Bauer took over the family farm and winery in 2000, and runs it with the help of his parents and his wife Karin. He makes grüner veltliner as well as riesling, a bit of pinot blanc, zweigelt, and the Wagram specialty: roter veltliner.

The soil here is loess, famous in this part of Austria. It's a hardened yellow dust, sometimes many meters deep, and is amazing for racy, high-acid white wines like grüner veltliner and riesling, and for roter veltliner as well.

Roter veltliner and grüner veltliner are actually unrelated (grüner comes from the traminer family). Roter is an ancient indigenous grape in Austria, the parent to a whole family of grapes in the veltliner family.

This 2017 has booming lemon, meyer lemon, and lots of tart peach and white flower on the palate, some kumquat, and some real savory hints on the back end. The finish is dry and super high acid with lots of minerality. It's good with creamy food, or fried dishes like schnitzel, or roast chicken, and lots of Asian food.
