2016 Hajszan Neumann Nussberg Gemischter Satz

The Nussberg hill, in northwest Vienna, is home to some of the best and most traditional winemaking in all of Austria. Perched above the Danube River to the east, and central Vienna to the south, it's here that Stefan Hajszan, among others, helped revitalize the production of Gemischter Satz ("mixed set" in German), the traditional Viennese field blend, and became the first to switch his vineyards to biodynamic viticulture.

The winery is now owned, and the wine made, by the outstanding Fritz Wieninger, himself one of the foremost boosters of the Gemischter Satz style, and the most well-known name in Vienna wine. Fritz took over operations at the winery in 2014, but he has kept the unique Hajszan Neumann label. He is a founding member, and the chairman, of "Wien Wein", a growers association dedicated to the Gemischter Satz style.

Each vineyard parcel of the various inter-planted grape varietals is picked, sorted, pressed, and fermented together, aged for a bit in stainless steel, then blended with each other parcel and bottled for the final wine.

This 2016 bottling is medium-bodied and crisp, with pear and white flower on the nose, a bit of lychee, and a dry high-acid finish. Great with creamy cheeses or dishes like pan fried chicken or pork, or even Vienna's own Wiener schnitzel.
