2020 Filipa Pato Nossa Calcário Bical

Like the Nossa Calcário baga, this bical is a showcase of grape varietal and terroir (the "our limestone" of the name). The grapes come from a single vineyard in the Óis do Barrio valley, only 15km from the ocean. Soils are limestone and the vines are around 40 years old in this prized spot.

Bical is a high-acid, mineral-driven varietal, which can have great aging potential. To this end, Filipa ages this wine in traditional 500-600 liter oak pipas for 8 months, spending another two months in bottle before release.

There's some floral aromatics and dried herbs, a hint of flint or rubber, followed up with fresh crisp green pear and pine nuts, and bright minerality, with a bit of raw cinnamon on the finish. Drink it with crab cakes, lobster, baked fish, other light meats, and nutty cheeses.
