2019 Filipa Pato Nossa Calcário Baga

The Nossa Calcário is Filipa's primary wine (she makes one red, of 100% baga, and one white, of  100% bical). The grapes for these wines are from her best vineyard sites, in the case of the baga three small vineyards of old (80 years) to very old (130 years and pre-phylloxera ungrafted in the Missão vineyard) vines, all farmed organically and biodynamically.

The name "Nossa Calcário" refers to the soil, "our limestone/clay", and to Filipa's passionate belief that the coastal terroir of Bairrada is perfectly suited to the baga varietal.

This 2019 has lots of violet up front and a bit of spice (reminiscent of cabernet sauvignon), with loads of berries and brambly fruit on the palate, and fine juicy tannins. It's pretty bright when first opened, but softens and mellows considerably when decanted for a bit. It's great with rich cheeses, pork sausage, rabbit, and quail/game hen.
